Café Gelato isn’t a place that you could walk to from campus in high heels, but you are a mere five minute drive away from unquestionable bliss. A friend and I decided to check it out on a warm weekday afternoon, ideal weather for a cool treat.

From Reynolda Road, Café Gelato has a creamy yellow facade and awning and directs customers to additional parking in the back. Potted flowers and a small two-person table complete the outside, perfect for enjoying your treat while facing Hanes Park across the road.

Inside, the pastel theme continues with creamsicle colored walls and cheerful decor. A very few small tables with fresh flowers are scattered around the tiny shop – great for a friend or two, but don't try to bring your entire hall with you.

Owner Ciska tells us the gelato is fresh, made daily. We taste samples of all the flavors and it quickly becomes apparent that it might be a little harder to decide on just one.

Eight to twelve flavors are offered every day on a rotating basis, with lemon being the daily standard. That day, chocolate, mango, lemon, mixed berry, hazelnut, strawberry and amaretto were a few of our choices. Don’t you worry, lactose-intolerants. The fruit flavors are water-based, so there really is something for everyone!

Feel free to mix two flavors in one cup, too. Cup sizes range from small ($2.50) to medium ($3.50) and finally, to large ($4.75). Don't be deterred by the small cups because this gelato really packs a punch. I am a lover of all things dessert related, but the medium was plenty.

Need a drink to go along with your delectable dessert? Café Gelato offers cappuccino, espresso, lattés, Coca-Cola products and LeBlue water. Hot chocolate will be coming soon for cooler weather.

Quiet, unobtrusive music and the courteousness of the owner (not to mention, of course, the gelato) serve to make this shop special. Really, the only thing left to say is thank you to Italy for gelato!
