When I think of pizza restaurants, I think of Pizza Hut, Dominoes and the other chains: cheap, fast, greasy and good. Although the term might seem oxymoronic, Botta Bing Pizza is an elegant pizza restaurant.

Here, you’ll find the sort of pizza that would be found in quaint, tiny little restaurants on the streets of Italy.

Beware: Botta Bing is not an Italian restaurant – the menu consists of pizza, pizza, and more pizza, but it is the most devoted pizza place I have ever experienced.

Pizzas are divided into four groups: red sauce, white sauce, smaller napoletana (a chunky tomato, olive oil and vinegar based sauce), and – for the selective diner – create your own.

Toppings range from the traditional (Italian sausage and hamburger) on the red sauce Boca pizza to the inventive. You’ll find mussels, goat cheese, and artichoke hearts on the white sauce Corinthians.

For red and white sauce pizzas, expect to pay anywhere from $15.95 for a 12-inch to $18.95 for a 16-inch. The napoletana-style pizzas – at ten inches – are reasonably priced for a dinner on the town, at only $7.95.

This pie may seem rather pricey, but two people (two hungry people at that) can easily split a 12-inch. Depending on your hunger level, test the desserts and appetizers – you will not leave disappointed.

The most popular appetizer is the Botta Bing Crostinis, a serving of four breadsticks with white sauce and marinara ($3.95). The desserts (a bargain at $3.95 each) vary daily and can be anything from basic to exotic. One day, you’ll find tiramisu; the next cheesecake – of the ricotta or fruit variety.

Although the food might be all pizza, the atmosphere is old-school Italian. Window frames, complete with overhanging fabric and window boxes, line the walls of the small restaurant. The 32 available seats around the tables inside are supplemented by 12 outside, so even on a Friday night, the wait is not terribly excessive.

Tables are covered with a tablecloth of brown paper and crayons are readily available for recording secret messages, tip calculations, or games of hangman. Beware that coloring time is limited, however, since the service is fairly swift.

Botta Bing might not be your typical pizza restaurant, but it is perfect for the adventurous (or more cultured) pizza extraordinaire.
