Carrabba’s Italian Grill serves its customers appetizing Italian-American cuisine in an atmosphere full of Tuscan scenery. Tantalizing aromas float from a kitchen that opens onto the main dining area, which offers ample seating.
Complementary fresh bread and dipping oil mixed with spices are provided upon being seated. The Antipasti , or appetizer, section of the menu includes such dishes as calamari ($8.49), crab cakes ($9.99) and shrimp scampi ($9.99). Although a tasty way to start off the meal, these appetizers are filling. It is wise to refrain from ordering too many starters in order to save room for the large entree portions.
The soup and salad, or Insalate and Zuppe portion of the menu consists of minestrone soup or the soup of the day (cup $3.49, bowl $5.49). Unique salads are options as well, such as the simple and refreshing Tomato Caprese ($6.99), ripe tomatoes and fresh mozzarella covered in olive oil and basil. The Insalata Fiorucci ($10.49), is a satisfying combination of mixed field greens, artichoke hearts, red bell peppers, and grilled eggplant topped with hazelnut goat cheese and vinaigrette.
One of the menu’s more interesting features is its wood-fired pizza section. These appetizer-sized pizzas are cooked in a wood-burning brick oven, but selection is limited. Only two types of pizza are available, the margherita and the Italian chicken. However, there are seemingly endless combinations of pizza with the Ti Piace, or make your own option ($9.99). With ten different toppings to choose from, even the pickiest of eaters can enjoy this menu item.
Most entrees range from around $12-$17 and include a variety of pasta, grilled meats, and Italian classics. Pasta Carrabba ($12.99) is an enticing mix of fettuccine alfredo with chicken, mushrooms, and peas. The Mezzaluna ($10.99), a rich yet satisfying dish, consists of delectable ravioli stuffed with chicken, ricotta, and spinach in a tomato cream sauce
Grilled options consist of chicken, salmon, shrimp, scallops, and beef served in a variety of ways. Some of Carrabba’s popular Italian classics are the Veal Marsala or Piccata ($16.49), the Chicken Parmesan ($15.99), and a classic spaghetti dish topped with homemade meatballs or Italian sausage ($11.99).
In addition to sporting an impressive choice of appetizers, soups, salads, and entrees, Carrabba’s also has a wine list that ranges from light to full-bodied. The menu features such specialty alcoholic beverages as a Chocolate Martini or the Wildberry Cocktail (both $8).
For those with a sweet tooth, a delectable Tiramisu ($5.99) awaits them at the end of the meal. Or choose the Sogno di Cioccolata, which translates to Chocolate Dream, ($6.49), a moist fudge brownie, brushed with Kahlua liquor, and chocolate mouse drizzled with chocolate sauce.
Founded in Houston by Johnny Carrabba and Damian Mandola in 1986, Carrabba’s Italian Grill has become one of the fastest growing restaurants in the country due to its joint partnership Outback Steakhouse, Inc. There are currently over 200 locations, and the Carrabba’s on South Stratford Road gives its customers a quality dining experience.
Wake Forest clubs and sororities are just some of the many large groups Carrabba’s has hosted in the past. Eighteen percent gratuity is added to all parties of eight or more. The space can hold large parties of up to 50 people, but lacks a separate, private room.
Carrabba’s also accommodates many local charity and church fundraisers. There is a base price of admittance, but the restaurant donates the majority of the profits to the attending organizations.
According to one of the assistant managers, Jonathan Moffet, Carrabba’s is busiest on Friday and Saturday nights from around 5-10:00 p.m. One can expect a 30 min. to 1 hour wait during these dinner rush hours, so it is wise to “call it in.” Calling in your name does not reserve you a table, but it will get your name on a list for a drastically decreased wait time.
Compared to other Italian chain restaurants, such as the Macaroni Grill, Carrabba’s has a slightly less extensive menu but a more favorable family atmosphere. Whether you are out with family or friends, attending a group function, or having a romantic dinner, Carrabba’s Italian Grill will provide you with a relaxing atmosphere, tasty food, and good service.
