About the time I was really getting tired of the usual restaurants I’ve been going to since freshmen year, I see a sign for the Celtic Café. Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a clue what Celtic food is. So when I was feeling particularly adventurous, I decided to check it out. I’m glad I did because I ended up finding a fun and unique restaurant complete with a refreshing flavor and character.

Tucked away in the corner of a shopping center, the café has characteristics of an Irish pub. The small bar in the back didn’t have an empty seat as two television sets showed playoff football games. Of course, there was a wide selection of Irish beers among other favorites, although it seemed a little pricy. Next to the bar, the open kitchen provides a bustling energetic atmosphere, but may be a bit much for some people in the small space. A short wall keeps the front half of the restaurant more intimate and removed from the action if you’re looking for something low-key.

The time had come to figure out what Celtic food was as I opened the menu and listened to the specials. I have to admit, I was a bit overwhelmed. The prices ranged from $6-16, with most full entrees closer to $16. It all sounded great; hearty food made from Irish family recipes puts a new spin on tradition. I questioned our server about almost everything on the menu and asked his opinion on my top three picks, and was surprised at his patience and genuine responses. I was also pleased to see the Irish owner presiding over the restaurant and ensuring that all went well.

By the time the food arrived, I really liked the place and was hoping that the food didn’t let me down. My fears were relieved as the seafood chowder I had chosen proved to be intensely flavorful and just what I wanted. I also sampled some of the sweet, tender, apple covered pork chops and spicy buffalo chicken wrap that my friends had selected and found them to be equally full of character. Just about anyone could find something they would enjoy from the diverse menu. If you’re looking for something to wake up your taste buds from the same boring rut you’ve subjected them to, you should definitely try it.

We were informed by the waiter that there is a completely different lunch menu that is said to be excellent and really draws in the crowd on weekdays. You might also like to know that - as if you need any more incentive than great food, service and atmosphere - the owner offers a 10% discount to Wake Forest students who show their ID. I would recommend it for a second or third date, or grab about five friends and fill up the bar. Either way, it will be worth your while to check it out.
