After what seems like forever, Musiq Soulchild is back and in full force. His recent album Luvanmusiq definitely stays true to Musiq’s style; soulful with some old school R&B flavor. If you’re into "grown and sexy R&B" you will love Musiq’s music, just as the album title suggests. He is a fan of 70’s soul music, with idols like James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, and Patti LaBelle. He is almost always compared to Stevie Wonder, so if you're a fan of his, Musiq is definitely someone to take a listen to.

This album is a bit shorter than Musiq’s previous works with only 12 tracks, which leaves you wanting more, but it is noteworthy nonetheless. Luvanmusiq took the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 within its first two weeks on the shelves proving that Musiq has fans out there just waiting for more.

We were first introduced to Musiq Soulchild and his somewhat odd way of naming his albums and songs back in 2000 with his debut album, Aijuswanaseing with his then most popular single "Just Friends (Sunny)." Next he released Juslisen in 2002, followed by "Soulstar" in 2003. But what exactly has Musiq been doing for the past three-and-a-half years? Well for one thing, he’s been working on Luvanmusiq, but he says he has also grown "personally, mentally, and psychologically."

And if you really listen to his lyrics on this album, you can hear the growth that he is talking about. Luvanmusiq takes you along for the ride on Musiq’s journey to find true love and devotion. His single "Teachme" is a plea to his girlfriend to tell him exactly what she wants because if she doesn’t, how is he supposed to know? "Thequestions" is a great example of Musiq’s poetic lyrical flow; it’s more of a poem than a song, but great nonetheless. "Msphiladelphia" is a ballad to a woman that he meets in a juke joint that he basically falls in love with at first sight.

Hopefully Musiq will continue to make great albums like this one. But I also hope he doesn't take three years off in between his next release. During his three year hiatus he made a label change, going from Def Jam to Atlantic Records. And it seems with this change came a little more support for his latest album. "Betterman" was co-produced with Raphael Saadiq and "Msphiladelphia" was co-produced with the ever popular singer/songwriter Ne-Yo. Luvanmusiq is definitely a must-have for any R&B fan and was well worth this reviewer's wait.
