“I love this song!” my friend yelled as she came into my room and heard Colbie Caillat’s “Bubbly” blasting from my laptop. I smiled in agreement, realizing that I had listened to the song on repeat almost 10 times now. The upbeat, melodic track is infectious, much like the entirety of Caillat’s new album, Coco.
Debut artist Colbie Caillat, a California singer-songwriter, says that, “a great song should lift your heart, warm your soul and make you feel good.” Following her own advice, Caillat’s new album is full of warm, catchy songs that draw the listener in. For some reason, I could not stop playing tracks such as “Bubbly,” “One Fine Wire,” and “Realize.” Caillat has a widespread appeal, surpassing the normally female-dominated pop listening audience. Even my macho boyfriend admitted that he, too, enjoyed Caillat’s richly melodic tracks.
I would compare Caillat to other soulful artists such as Corinne Bailey Rae and perhaps even Alicia Keys— minus the piano. On tracks like “Tailor Made” and “Feelings Show” Caillat allows her smooth, comforting voice to shine through.
Furthermore, all the songs on the CD seem to have been well thought through in every aspect. Melodies, choruses and lyrics all seem to be in sync and of real quality. Unlike many other CDs I did not get the feeling that there were any “filler” songs used simply to take up time on record. I honestly enjoyed each of the songs.
However, my only complaint is that there was not much variety on the record. I felt as if the songs all sounded incredibly similar. The pleasant melodies and slow beat that seemed to be Caillat’s trade marks were a little over used. While I really liked all of the songs on the CD, by the end of the record I was a bit Caillat-ed out. A little bit of change in tempo or style would have freshened up the record overall.
