If you’re looking to break from the traditional Wake Forest bar hangouts, and want to try something a little different, Elliott’s Revue is definitely worth a visit. Practically across the street from Finnegan’s Wake and The Garage, this little bar is a convenient stop the next time you’re hitting up the bars downtown.
Elliott’s Revue’s patrons are generally of the alternative scene and the bar reflects this in its many non-traditional aspects. For example, the bar has free wi-fi. But it’s not just a different crowd of people, it really is a melting pot. On my visits, I always see a diverse crowd of young people and run into other groups of Wake students. There’s a reason for that; they all come to enjoy the unusual, and constantly changing, atmosphere.
Elliott’s Revue is adorned with posters and album covers ranging from The Who to the Dead Kennedys. Music plays continuously and the crowd picks up, especially later at night. Booths and tables around the bar provide a comfortable place to spend the night talking with friends. Foosball and pool tables provide entertainment, as well as arcade games like Golden Tee and Pac Man.
The drink specials are good and change each night. On my visit, Magic Hat beer and house bourbon were on special for $3 each. Besides the well-stocked bar, Elliott’s Revue also functions as a coffee bar. Since the bar is open until 4 a.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the coffee house aspect serves well when liquor sales have to close at 2 a.m. On top of all that, Elliott’s Revue serves a variety of microwavable foods and snacks too. Who doesn’t want a hot pocket or White Castle burger during a night at the bars? These features make Elliot’s Revue a great, late night hang out.
Every other week there is music trivia, and occasionally Elliott’s Revue has live music or a number of other different events, such as poetry slams or karaoke nights. Because it is not actually a restaurant, Elliott’s Revue has to require membership in order to have a liquor license. The fee is only $1 and you can sign up inside.
And unlike many bars, Elliott’s Revue isn’t strictly for those over 21. On quieter nights, such as weeknights, it is an all-ages bar. From Sunday to Wednesday, Elliott’s Revue is open from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. and on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, it is open from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m.
“It’s the only place in town where you can study during the day and drink at night,” says senior Ben Sinclair, “and it’s a lot less pathetic than your dorm room.”
With such great hours and a diverse and fun atmosphere, Elliott’s Revue is definitely worth a visit. The constantly new and unique environment makes it a place to frequent. So if you’re out on the town, stop by Elliott’s Revue to enjoy an unusual treat.
