The year as a Fellow has given me invaluable experience and rewarding opportunities that have helped shape my outlook as a young professional. I never imagined I would know so much about Wake Forest and feel privileged that I have been able to understand the reality of administration. I have been fortunate enough to work in and learn from the various offices at Wake Forest. As a Fellow, I have learned industriousness, tact, and teamwork among a host of new skills. I have updated blogs, participated in a service trip, and held managerial duties. I have interacted with students and administration with the mission to bridge the gap between the two. Though I’ve found times difficult in balancing students and administration, I have found it an enriching experience, developing my people-skills and communication techniques. I know this program has potential. I wish the Fellows luck in filling their roles and soaking up all that Wake Forest has to offer.

-Tristan Salvanera, President’s Office

My year as a Wake Forest Fellow has been a formative and enjoyable one. This experience was full of growing, through challenging experiences and learning opportunities. Most memorable of all will not be the projects or assignments I completed, but the community of people with whom I interacted daily. My colleagues in the Division of Student Life, the other Fellows, the Event Planning Office, Aramark employees, and many more all provided a wonderful environment with which I’m confident is rivaled by few. As a young professional, the support, guidance, and encouragement I received from my mentor, Dr. Mary Gerardy, and Division of Student Life colleagues, allowed me to develop both personally and professionally. The high expectations and varied responsibilities placed before me were staunch markers of the confidence my supervisors had in me. They also displayed equal support and investment in my success after the fellowship came to an end. I could not have asked for more balanced, amicable, and competent individuals to work with.

As I look back, I am amazed at the many facets of the university with which I’ve had the opportunity to engage. It has been my ultimate privilege and great joy to be a part of the inaugural class of Fellows. Best wishes to the new Fellows!

-Keon McGuire, Student Life

Nearly 300 alumni, parents and friends across the country have shared their memories, their passions and their lives with me. I have talked with alumni of all ages, backgrounds, interests and regions – the one thing that we all have in common is a deep love for Wake Forest; its community, its hospitality, its people, its standards, and its integrity. What a truly special Wake Forest family we have.

I feel lucky to have experienced Wake Forest in a different light this year. Many can brag about a wonderful college experience as a student but, few are fortunate enough to channel that passion into a career. I have come to value this place as an alumna myself. Meeting with our alumni, I have been inspired by their passion and dedication to all areas of life. Wake Foresters are people who truly do well and do good.

I’m delighted to say that I will continue my career here at Wake Forest, next year working with young alumni and our reunions program. While sad to leave the Fellows position, I place it in the incredibly capable hands of our newest fellow, Trevor Taylor (’09). I hope all alumni have the chance to meet him.

-Lydia Harter, Advancement

This past year has gone by so fast. Even though I feel far removed from being a student, there is so much to learn every single day. I love the work I do and the people I work with. They’ve confidently given me projects I didn’t think I could do. They’ve let me mess up, and yet learn from my mistakes to succeed in the projects. The best part about this job is the academic setting we work in. They are not only your supervisors and co-workers, but advisors and mentors as well.

The people here are phenomenal and the opportunities available, incredible. Even though it was an adjustment at first to switch from a student to staff position, I was treated with respect and an equal at all levels. It has allowed me to learn fascinating aspects of Wake Forest and the higher education sector itself as well.

Taking on this position was one of the best decisions I have made. Not only have I grown professionally, but I’ve discovered intriguing qualities and interests I possess. I am curious to see what possibilities lay ahead. Regardless, the skills I’ve acquired and relationships I’ve built will stay with me for a long time.

-Parul Patel, Office of the Provost

Carpe Quad

As the semester winds down and stress levels are high for a variety of reasons (finals, job-prospects, commencement proceedings), Wake Forest shouts back, "Hey! We need a break!" Thus, the governing bodies that be (students and administration) present Seize the Quad for the second time.

With such a successful turnout and exciting events (despite the Cleveland State game) from the last party on the Quad, Student Government and administration wanted to provide students with another opportunity to partake in social events on the Wake campus. The main goal of Seize the Quad is to reinvigorate social events on campus.

So drop those books for just a couple of hours, grab a couple of friends, and enjoy the festivities this Friday, April 17.

NOLA: The Future

A week has gone by and the service trip to New Orleans, LA seems so fresh to those who participated yet becoming so distant as we all return to the routine at Wake Forest University. A new group has probably taken our places amidst the power tools and begun the mudding process, all helping to reach our goal: helping the homeowner move in. As I reflect on the experience in NOLA, I am extremely surprised by the amount of devastation and work still to be done; more importantly, I am surprised by the selflessness of our students and the hope people still have despite the destruction.

My intentions for this trip were two-fold: to gauge the service opportunities students took and how we as university could improve our methods in promoting "Pro Humanitate." These goals were met, but in the process, I gained more in the areas of personal growth, knowledge of the extent of Hurricane Katrina, and community engagement. The people of NOLA continue to rebuild both their homes and lives, with some help from a group of 55 students from Wake Forest University.

Our teams split up into three groups: St. Bernard Project construction, after-school day-care, and elderly care. All three areas in the town of Chalmette, LA needed help simply because there was no one around to do it. In each respective group, we all met with the NOLA community, learning of the aftermath and the effect on individual lives in the community.

The St. Bernard Project team began with insulation and dry-walling, donated by Habitat for Humanity and Home Depot. Supervised by AmeriCorps members, our team set out to surpass the goal for each day. We finished two bedrooms, a living room, and both bathrooms. While few students had construction experience, we all learned quickly through teamwork and guidance from our supervisors. Each day our homeowner would stop by and recount a new story of the days after the hurricane. She pointed in the attic where her husband stayed with their five dogs and, ultimately, punched out the ceiling, climbing onto the roof, finding a drifting boat, and saving neighbors stranded on the rooftops.

In review, our trip proved more than a service opportunity. It gave some students a new venue that they may try for future plans. It gave other students a chance to visit a new locale and interact with a new community. Overall, it give us a chance to build and cultivate relationships between the Wake Forest and NOLA community. My hope is that students will spread the word of the work still waiting to be done in the Gulf communities, but also increase the awareness of service prevalent in our Wake Forest community.

"Do not forget us"

As our week in New Orleans draws to a close, I can't help but dwell on the reality that New Orleans has become a forgotten city. Within this city are people struggling to find the resources and the money to rebuild their lives. In unknown places such as St. Bernard Parish, citizens of this middle class neighborhood are adjusting to asking for help, not giving it. Rather than a hand out, American citizens are asking for a hand up. Hard working people are questioning where they fit in this country. As our attention turns to other parts of this world and other parts of this country, I am finding myself asking, how can we remember New Orleans?

A great example of this is the work done by Zack Rosenberg and Liz McCartney, founders of the St. Bernard Project with which we have been working this week. Prior to Hurricane Katrina Zack was working as a trial lawyer and Liz in non profit education work. Six months after the storm hit, Zack and Liz traveled to the parish to help in the rebuilding work. Expecting to be building up rather than gutting out, they were shocked to see most of the homes had not been touched and the entire parish was practically uninhabited. Upon leaving the parish they asked numerous citizens what they wanted and how they could help them in their efforts to return home. The citizens of the parish gave one simple request, do not forget us. Zack and Liz have headed this desperate plea. They returned home to raise the funds that would allow them to move to the city and start rebuilding homes. On the weekends the pair worked to gut houses in the area. With time they met a homeowner named Frank White who allowed them to fix up his old appliance store to serve as a office and warehouse for their budding project. Today, St. Bernard is a world renowned rebuilding organization that serves as a fine example on what happens when hard working, good people work together to find a solution to a solvable problem. To date they have rebuilt 200 homes in the parish and are working to expand their ingenious rebuilding system to Gentilly, Lakeview, Midcity, and New Orleans East. In January they opened a free mental health clinic adjacent to their offices where clients can come to gain the critical mental health and psychiatric services they so disparately require as they seek to rebuild their lives.

What can we take away from the work of Zack and Liz? I think it can be summed up quite simply. These problems are solvable and we have the capacity right now to do something about it.

. My hope for our group as we return back to Wake is that New Orleans isn't quickly forgotten. This trip should be the start of something in our lives, not the end. How can we empower ourselves and our friends and family to do something about the problems in the world? Daily we are surrounded by the needs of our community, and as citizens of this country and this world we must sense the great urgency to make a difference and start doing so now.

My hope is that the students on this trip spread the truth and the reality of what New Orleans looks like today. I hope each goes home to Wake Forest and become the voice of those we have met here in the parish. Rather than sit on the reality of this community so devastated by the hurricane three and a half years later, students should use the connections, the knowledge, and the relationships they have formed to encourage their peers and family to lend a hand, a heart, and a voice to the people of New Orleans.

NOLA Day 2: Putting up the Foundation

After two days of construction work, filled with frustrations and success, we put a face to the service we are doing. The woman is a young native of Chalmette, Lousiana with two daughters and five dogs. During the storm of Katrina, she evacuated but her husband stayed behind to rescue the dogs and wait out the storm. In the end, he swam around the attic, saving the animals, punching out a hole in the roof, and rescuing nearby neighbors with a neighbor's boat. She comes by cheery, filled with hope for the future. Meeting this courageous woman helped all of us step back and reflect on our own fortunes. Personally, I cannot picture myself feeling lucky that I live in a relatively spacious trailer when I previously owned a two-bedroom home. However, even three and a half years later, such accommodations are almost luxurious when considering the fate of many. Only two doors next to this woman's house lives a man whose life is still far from recovery. Twenty years ago, when he bought his house, he put the deed under his mother's name without knowing the fate that lay ahead. Since his mother's house was also deemed uninhabitable, she did not have enough insurance to cover both houses. Thus, this man has received no form of aid to rebuild his home. Furthermore, to keep the local government from tearing it down due to abandonment, he has moved back onto the land in a very small trailer. Fifteen of our group have been struggling for three days to insulate and dry wall a house, but the thought of one man trying to accomplish all this and much more is truly astonishing. These are only two stories on one street of a large metropolis, but they are representative of many. New Orleans is a unique city where one block is lined with plantation-era mansions and the next holds mainly dilapidated houses, but despite these vast socio-economic discrepancies, they are all united by a disaster much bigger than themselves. The estimated time for a full recovery is 20 to 25 years, but if we continue to remember and support this community, perhaps we can shorten this road to rebuilding.

NOLA Day 1: Katrina Relief and the Youth Movement

As we enter the town of Chalmette, Louisiana, I notice the dilapidated houses and minimal edifices. Before the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina, over 29,000 structures stood strong in the St. Bernard Parrish; all but 3 were claimed uninhabitable post-Katrina. Pain, heartache, displacement, and death have plagued the historical state of Louisiana. The Federal, state, and local governments continue to fight over recognition and monies for distribution to the communities that lost their homes in Katrina. However, aid continues amidst the economic turmoil plaguing our country and the forgotten need of the people of Louisiana. 55 Wake Forest students have decided to use their time to travel to Louisiana and help restore housing to communities in Louisiana. Through the St. Bernard Project, teams of 5 have dispersed through the community to aid AmeriCorps volunteers in rebuilding houses, but most importantly restoring the community. Though work has been physically and mentally draining, our Demon Deacons are learning the meaning of civic engagement and the tools they can bring back to the Wake Forest community to perpetuate our motto: Pro Humanitate.

For Humanity, For our Community

Pro-Humanitate- latin; For Humanity

Filled with the hustle and bustle of extracurriculars, classes, and social events, our university campus can be described in one word: busy. We utilize our time management skills to make the deadline for an editorial, squeeze a meeting for an organization, all the while balancing the long-hours preparing for the rigors of academics. Amidst the frenzied schedule of both university students and faculty, the time for community service and civic engagement can be lost in the shuffle. Indeed, volunteer service and community outreach are thriving at Wake Forest via programs through the Volunteer Service Corps. and various organizations, but is that enough? In troubling times, as our current economy, we may remain complacent in the community work done thus far. “Every little bit helps, right?” Agreeably, the communities served internationally and domestically prove the global scope of Wake Forest’s helping hand. However, we must continue to look deeper into the Winston-Salem community that welcomes Wake Forest’s citizens, for ways to help the humbled host. Through continuous efforts from the Wake Forest community, via service-learning programs or organizational partnerships, we can develop and sustain the help that is most needed in our community.

A History of Tradition

As of late, we have had a tradition of prominent speakers, such as Indra Nooyi and David Gergen, give their insights on world issues and current events, no tradition remains ingrained within the Wake Forest community as Convocation. On February 26, 2009 (4pm), Professor of History Anthony Parent will speak on the struggles and successes of diversity on Wake’s campus. While many traditions have faded over time, Convocation withstands the test of time and allows us as the Wake Forest community to share ideas, learn a new perspective, and most importantly, connect with our Wake Forest. Fear not, Wake Forest has implemented a new shuttle service that takes students downtown Thursdays, Friday, and Saturdays (8pm-3am) to all the popular scenes such as Foothills Brewery, 4th Street Filling Station, and Finnigan’s Wake. At a time when Winston-Salem Arts Council’s main objective is revitalizing the downtown area to appeal to young professionals and students, the Wake Forest shuttle system is truly a blessing. Indeed, groups such as Student Union, Student Government, Residence Life & Housing, and countless others have worked diligently in providing quality social programming and space for the Wake Forest community. However, with new business springing up downtown and more social venues opening, it comes as no surprise that Wake students would like to leave the wrought-iron gates of the university and find other outlets to enjoy and mingle. More importantly, the bus will hopefully curb the amount of drunk-driving incidents. Though in its trial phase, I believe the downtown shuttle will continue on, illustrating that when students speak out, the university administration listens.

In a land far, far away...

As our campus begins the new semester, fresh from the holidays, many of our students are re-inserting themselves back into the Wake Forest community, reminiscing of their study-abroad experiences and filled with a slew of experiences. While each student’s experience was both unique and fulfilling, the overarching goals of becoming a traveler and not a tourist paint the theme for our Wake Foresters abroad. Thus, I interviewed both a student and professor on their experiences abroad, what it meant to them, and what they’d like to tell others pursuing the dream of becoming a global citizen:

“I needed to go abroad because it fit my major and my hours. However, I wanted to go abroad to experience a new culture, new sounds, and new people. I think living with a family in the program (Dijon, France) held as many positives and negatives as the Wake abroad houses. It taught me how to develop deep friendships, provided a more inviting atmosphere to observe cultural nuances, and forced me to get out of my element and speak the native tongue. Despite the negatives such as dietary issues or some of the families acting like surrogate parents, I found that full immersion helped develop my cultural understanding to the next level. Additionally, my close proximity to highly diverse countries within the EU allowed for intercultural exchange and exploration. However, my expectations of quick friendships were met with difficulty as I attempted to form genuine relationships with non-Americans. It became a difficult task when I knew the bonds I created were only short-lived. It doesn’t mean I didn’t try because the ones I did make, I have continued past the program.

What do you think Wake could have done better/did right?

"I think Wake has made great improvements with the Center for International Studies. They’re offering more programs and options, atypical from most schools. I think our presence in the international community is growing with each year and each new wave of new study-abroad students. I just wish Wake would offer more scholarships, accept credit from more programs, and advertise for more summer programs. But I think with the resources it has, the Center for International studies is doing its best."

Any advice?

"My piece of advice to future travelers: Take risks to embarrass yourself. Make mistakes because you’re only there for a short time. Take advantage of every situation."

Mark Hoover is a junior Political Science, French double-major from the Congo.

Beauty and the Greek

While students continue to reminisce over the momentous win over our infamous rivals (UNC), others begin the process and traditions deeply embedded in the Wake Forest community: the Greek system. While the many male students continued to enjoy the last tidbits of their holidays, swarms of Wake Forest’s female students participated in Greek rush, inserting themselves into a new outlet for social interaction, philanthropic events, and personal friendships. Though an arduous week of social parties, mingling, and conversation, both upper-upperclassmen Greek students and prospective members discover the “right fit” in their respective organizations. While many students wonder what those bright-colored shirts with funky letters printed across them represent, for the students wearing them, they represent friendship and bonds.
While it may seem the spring semester seems to display a blooming Greek culture, the Wake Forest community illustrates its unique ability to interweave both Greek and non-Greek activities. Promoting synergy, Greek housing is interspersed within the residence halls along with an open-party system. Unlike many campuses that segregate Greek and non-Greek students, Wake Forest aims to provide all students with opportunities to interact, despite their affiliations. Springing into the new semester, we’ll see a plethora of colors on the quad.

Spring Forward

In preparation for a new semester at Wake Forest, new routines, and new experiences, students retreat back to their familiar surroundings and spend time with friends and family. Amidst the holiday shopping sales, plethora of food and goodies, and numerous gatherings of relatives, we use this precious time to rejuvenate ourselves for the upcoming Wake semester. Filled with events such as SpringFest, Greek Life Rush, and Demon Deacon Basketball, the semester presents new opportunities to get involved. With each class, this upcoming semester marks a personally unique experience for the individual. As a freshman, one looks forward to meeting new friends through fraternity and sorority rush and narrowing those extracurricular activities. As sophomores, we mature and take on leadership positions in our respective organizations, declare majors, and apply for study abroad. As juniors, we reconnect with friends after studying abroad, reinsert ourselves into our activities, apply for internships, and look ahead to the final year. Finally, as seniors, we reflect and reminisce on the four years, making sure this semester will be our best in all aspects. We prepare for the future and cherish the memories of time at Wake. We look forward to the newness of spring.

Trimming the Trees...

As exams come to an end, residence halls close, and we prepare for rest and relaxation over the holidays, work continues on at Wake Forest. The quad is bustling with bodies of not students but workers chopping down the trees (gasp!). Wait, wait, hold on a second, did I miss something? What will shade me when I'm studying outside? What will serve as goal-posts for my pick-up frisbee games? What can I lean on when making conversation with that special someone?

Fear not, undergrads, the ash trees are being slowly replaced with gorgeous maple trees to keep the rays away during the sunny days. Due to disease, like in 1987, the current ash trees are withering but are being replaced with several maples. We'll all be able to enjoy the beauty of the quad as if the old trees never moved.

As a focal point of the Reynolda Campus, Hearn Plaza presents a perfect locale for students to meet, hang out, and take a few moments from their busy academic and extra-curricular lives. No different from old photos and as we saw in the Fall Convocation picnic, our Wake Forest community thrives on Hearn Plaza. So when the springtime comes around and the weather warms up, let's enjoy the the warm rays, the shade of the trees, and most importantly, the company of friends.

I have a dream...

As the New Year inches closer, we are met with not only new opportunities and new beginnings, but also new challenges and hardships. Within the last year, the sound bites from our media have been filled with election coverage, falling gas prices, and, most importantly, the economy. What does this mean for us as students and young adults entering the job market and beginning our climb to achieve the “American Dream?”

In the Roaring Twenties, we witnessed our nation’s economy booming, the stock market growing explosively, and the emergence of social upheaval. F. Scott Fitzgerald captured not only both America’s flourishing society but also its socio-economic complacency in The Great Gatsby. Difficult but yet rewarding, Jay Gatsby’s climb to the top embodies the adversities we overcome everyday to achieve the “American Dream.” While we face difficulties and hardships, much like our predecessors in the Roosevelt and Kennedy years, we must maintain a positive outlook on both the economy and where our future plans may take us. As History Department Chair Dr. Simone Caron reiterates, “Obama’s plan for the future will need to address economic woes faced by Roosevelt, and international tensions faced by Kennedy. The landslide election results demonstrate that the American public has faith that Obama can handle the multifarious tribulations facing the country (Wake Forest Magazine, December 2008).”

Indeed, faith gives meaning in times of trouble, and this hope is what binds our Wake Forest community despite the economic woes. “It may seem terribly ironic: that we are entering the period of economic downturn just at the same time we have launched our ambitious strategic plan. However, I am not deterred or pessimistic,” remarked President Hatch (State of the University Address). We, as students, must remain optimistic and hopeful that our futures will remain bright and promising. This is the first time our generation has been tested. Achieving our goals may take some creativity and our “American Dream’s must not be taken for granted.

Through adversity or difficulty, character is formed or at least you have to learn to be resourceful in your thinking and your approach. "The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope”-Barack Obama.

To Drink or Not to Drink?

This debate has been going on since the days of Prohibition. Discussing the lowering the drinking age to 18 or keeping it at 21 seems to be on the mind of not only students but university presidents since the Amethyst Initiative was first organized by President John McCardell of Middlebury College in Vermont.

The statement as finally drafted does not, by design, prescribe a particular policy change. It does, however, state clearly the signatories' belief that 21 is not working as well as the public may think, that its unintended consequences are posing increasing risks to young people, and that it is time for a serious debate among our elected representatives about whether current public policies are in line with current realities.

Criticism has ensued from both sides, especially from MADD (Mother's Against Drunk Driving) with an estimated 25,000 lives having been saved ever since 21 has become the standard.

As students, we should consider both angles, how it affects us and what positives and negatives of either side. As citizens in the community, we should think how it will affect our community and our families. As young adults, are we responsible enough? Can our culture handle it? How does this affect our youth?

For more information: http://www.amethystinitiative.org/

No SAT? Should I sell one of my kidneys to pay for Wake Forest? Where did these questions happen? Open communication, please?

While many of us were stuffing our faces with bbq at the North Campus food-fest, some of your fellow students attending the Student Forum on Strategic Planning. In attendance were President Nathan Hatch, Provost Jill Tiefenthaler, Admissions Director Martha Allman, Interim Dean Paul Ribisl, and SG President Jermyn Davis. Following the previous two forums, this forum addressed issues on the future of academic life for the student, the new SAT policy, financial aid, and dean's list requirements. Diving right into questions, SG President Davis asked about the overall goals of the Strategic Plan. More on the Strategic Plan can be found at:

http://groups.wfu.edu/planning/index.html

Some questions asked during the forum:

1) Why has the Dean's List been changed from 3.0 to 3.4? Isn't that a bit drastic? Can we not grandfather upper-classmen? Might affect us in the job market and graduate schools? Who came up with this crazy idea?

2)Increase in students? Increase in faculty? How does that balance?

3)Ok, what about this optional SAT? This might hurt us, right?

4)Whis is Wake so expensive?

5)Sustainability?

These questions and others were answered by the administrators in accordance with the Strategic Planning. Weber Professor of Art, gave a riveting speech on the Arts and their importance in our lives. Lubin explained how the arts spark our curiosity and engage our imagination in his speech titled “Disturbing the Peace: Wake Forest and the Arts.” Amidst our athletic games, academics, and extracurricular activities, the arts can be discarded and forgotten. The true Wake Forest experience encompasses all aspects of the university and helps develop the well-rounded citizen we all aspire to become.

"Yes, art disturbs the peace. Gently in some instances, violently in others, it draws us out of ourselves, out of our small-minded self-absorption, and makes us see, hear, feel — and understand — the world anew. As a nation, we can hardly do without the arts. As a university, we can only grow stronger because of them."-Dr. David Lubin.

What better way to reflect on Lubin's thoughtful speech and engage in community interaction than a picnic following Convocation? In a response to a need for more events that engaged the Wake Forest community, the Provost's office sponsored a campus-wide outdoor picnic to feed both the desire for student/faculty interaction and the belly. Indeed, sharing that picnic square with your History or Calloway professor can be uneasy at first but with events as these, we hope to remove that barrier and provide an environment in which administrators/faculty and students can interact and communicate. So engage the arts, enjoy the interaction, and develop the relationships that build you as a person.

If there are any suggestions on improving Convocation and/or the picnic, please send them to Tristan Salvanera (salvantp@wfu.edu)

Mastering the Campus

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; How does this affect me? What is going on?

As a campus evolves and the progressive initiatives of the student-body materialize, the administration, along with student input, formulates plans to create a better environment for both academia and community. With the help of architects Ayers-Saint-Gross, Matt Cullinan (VP of Administration), and student committees, the Campus Master Plan looks at ways to enhance Wake Forest University. Looking to the original plans when Wake first moved to Winston-Salem, the new plans try to embody those first ideas.

While there were buildings tied to the strategic plan (to be approved by the trustees) such as a new freshman residence hall, upper-classmen residence hall, recreation center and original pathway through Davis field, many of the plans are just ideas and can be changed at any time by administration, but most importantly, by students’ needs. Additionally, increased quads, bike-friendly and pedestrian-friendly paths, and LEED-certified buildings hope to create a better learning and social atmosphere for current and future deacons. Looking ahead at the 5-year, 10-year, and 50-year plans, Wake Forest University has many exciting renovations and additions coming its way and we can all look forward to, as part of the Wake Forest family, a new, progressive campus.

If you’d like to know more in-depth, please visit http://groups.wfu.edu/masterplan/

Student Forum: Student Life

Student Life Forum? What did I miss? Where's Brendle again?

While many students stayed indoors due to the ever-changing weather of Hurricane Ike, other students decided to brave the storm and attend a Student Forum concerning student life. Hosted by Student Government and the President's Office, the forum hoped to create a casual and open discussion between students and administration concerning the intricacies of social and academic life for Wake students.

Some Questions:

1) I hear that Greek Life is being downplayed by the administration

2) What are the thoughts on tuition-freezing?

3) Parking?

4) Juicy Campus?

5) What is the University doing to ease the transition for international students?

6) Financial aid?

In attendance were President Nathan O. Hatch and VP Ken Zick. Between these two administrators and Jermyn Davis, students were able to ask upfront and bluntly of issues and concerns of the student community. By facilitating these interactions, students won't feel "left in the dark" or "fend for yourself." These forums and discussions are meant for you, the student, to have your voice heard and get a real, truthful answer from the administration. At times, administration may not have the answers right away but can find the people who do. So stand up, speak out, and be heard. You can be the agent of change.

Coming SEPTEMBER 30TH (6:30-7:30pm) in Benson 401 will be the third forum on Strategic Planning and Admissions. Questions of SAT, Admissions policy, and academic life can be addressed during this forum. In attendance: SG President Jermyn Davis, Provost Jill Tiefenthaler, President Hatch, and Admissions Director Martha Allman. Bring your friends and bring your questions.

President's Weekend

What exactly is President's Weekend and why can't I get parking on campus?

President's weekend serves to honor financial contributors to Wake Forest University. As students, we all believe that our parents hard-earned tuition pays for the exorbitant rates Wake Forest asks of us. However, many scholarships, financial aid, and funding for athletics come from these generous alum and supporters of Wake Forest University. This past weekend, we listened to a presentation by Dr. Hatch and Provost Thiefenthaler of our rankings in giving and funding. The funding from these donors help us students enjoy our athletics, roll in our grass, and receive the best education. So when you're rolling in that dough and just can't think of what to do with it, think about what your contribution can do.

Hearing Aides

I always wonder what those students wearing gold badges at Convocation, Football games, and other events really do? What exactly do they do? Why do they seem so important? Can I look as fly as them? How do I become one? Wait...what was it I was applying to again?

Amongst the hordes of students filling in the seats of Wait Chapel during Convocation and the tailgating festivities during football games, gold badges, suits, and confidence hustle and bustle to numerous events. These peers are President's Aides, student leaders who have taken an extra step towards becoming more acquainted, more involved, and more concerned about the interaction between students and university administration. In addition, President's Aides meet regularly with President Nathan O. Hatch, providing an additional communication link between students and the administration.
The group was established in 1989, shortly after Thomas K. Hearn, Jr. became president. Dr. Hearn was interested in ways to stay in touch with students: to listen to their concerns, to learn from their perspectives, and to give him a sounding board for ideas and initiatives. Over time, President's Aides also took on a "student ambassador" role, serving the President and the University as student representatives for a variety of university events.
Today, President's Aides represent students who have demonstrated leadership in academic life, student life and community service. The application process for President's Aides begins in the spring, when rising juniors and seniors can apply for open positions. A committee reviews all applications, conducts interviews, and makes the final selection.
